Thanks to Jake and Robiecheaux for Good Brithday - - saved me from my selections! And I almost did Shaara, a good call from Gforce. Congrats to all today's winners.
Was looking forward to today, a Varian @Bev (see Rob below), XJ Rascal and a near certainty to get 40% return on capital. OK I've had a small treble with Local Dynasty to return a bit over 5s but that's still short as Frankie could put a spike in it. Longer is
A further thought about the Irish St Leger, following the interesting comments from @el gran senor and @Dilton yesterday. Hamish ran a huge race over his optimum trip. He is a class horse over 14f but just doesn't get 2m as shown last October at Ascot. So the number of targets he can be aimed at each season is limited, especially as he needs soft ground. I have always thought he would have made a top staying hurdler but that ain't gong to happen (even though W. Haggas's dad used to be married to the owner of the great Silver Buck)!
Fun fact: Silver Buck was discovered in Irish point to points in 1977 by a certain Barney Curley and sold on to Michael Dickinson - on condition Barney would be given the nod when he was ready to win over hurdles. He was entered in an amateur riders' novice hurdle at Catterick and opened at 12/1. Barney had shedloads of cash on, forcing the price in to 5/1, only for Silver Buck - a highly strung type of horse - to nearly run out at he last. Tom Tate was alive to his quirks and managed to get him over safely and the gamble was landed. That was the lowly start of a great career.
