Well done Gaz, Gforce, and Highflying with Monday winners. If I've left anyone out, I apologise; please leave a message on this thread and I'll update.
Rampage lives up to his name & charges home at 4/1. He needed every yard of Ballybrit's mile & a half on soft. I'd normally discard a tracker that's off a rating 13lb higher than their previous winning mark, but this fella could go in again if stepped up in trip. Especially with young James Ryan taking off 7lb.
The Great North Run took place last weekend but for me the biggest run and my daughter's involvement (she's 38 now) was the Pilgrim's Ultra. Actually it is 3 runs as entrants can do 50k, 100k or 100 miles. Because of the GNR it gets no publicity. Everyone set off from Holy Island at 8am in blistering heat. I wondered if they might have called it off. It was too hot for me sat outside The Jolly Fisherman at Craster having a pint and watching dolphins, which was the finish line for the 50k. Doing that in the conditions was a wonderful achievement. My daughter's running partner, a big lad, got a bit of sunstroke and wisely retired having achieved the first goal. He returned to their base for some R&R.
We were at Warkworth Castle, still shy of half way early evening when we saw the leading female runner, the young and slight Sarah Perry who was 4th and mused whether she'd finish. Fortuneately the evening brought cooling conditions but it was still warm.
At the water station at the Angler's Arms Weldon Bridge it was pitch dark but daughter had found someone to get along with, but that ended there as she stopped for nutrition and he decided to carry on as it was only 8 miles to the 100k finish. Me n SWMBO bailed out there as 10pm is getting late for us oldies with an hour drive to our base in Hexham. As a parent you worry. A whole list of what could go wrong kept getting longer. You can track all the runners and several were getting well off route before working their way back to going in the right direction.
The 100k finish at Rothbury saw big changes in the field. Several leaders dropped out. They probably got there and just seized up. The drop out rate was a massive 42% which when taking in that the entrants are experienced runners who have trained hard just demonstrates how attritional the conditions were. Didn't do for Sarah who was now leading! Only 38 miles to go in the night, or another 8 hours for her. Daughter's running partner reappeared at Rothbury and took on running with her for the next stretch which would take about 6 hours. After the condition he was in that was a big call. He, both, made it to Great Whittington about 10 miles from the finish. As he said, he'd done 100k, just not in the right order.
Daughter's husband took over as chaperone for the final stretch. As the route is pretty much in fields beside the road we could keep meeting up and cheering her on. St Oswald's Way finishes at Heaven's Field but that's only 97 miles so the run was extended to the George Hotel at Chollerford. I'm still emotional about it. She broke down in tears, I cried, SWMBO cried, well everyone did!
There were only a handful of women runners and Sarah won and daughter came 5th showing that women can excel in this type of event. Sarah didn't receive the cheers and accolades she deserved as she got to the finish at about half 8 in the morning and no-one was around!
Then the weather turned. Massive thunderstorm for the 10 still going to endure and it took around 5 hours for them all to complete. What an achievement to finish with all the weather that they had to beat. Heros all.
Wow, what an achievement. Congratulations to your daughter.
My wife and I hiked St Cuthbert's Way (Melrose to Holy Island, c. 69 miles) in three days a few years back. The last leg between Wooler and Lindisfarne was walked in blazing heat and we did it at Light Infantry pace (i.e. at the double) because we knew the tea room closed at 5pm - we were gasping for a cuppa. We made it with minutes to spare but sadly there was no one there to applaud us over the final yards. The monk's causeway seemed to go on for an eternity.
A fine story, well told. What an achievement and what a special feeling as parents, one of those emotional cocktails that can never be experienced outside of that particular mix of pride, relief, reflections on childhood and, sometimes on mortality. It's a privilege for us to hear it from you.
On dolphins, years ago I inherited a stuffed one a child had outgrown and consigned to the bin. Useless as I am at DIY, am happy to say I managed reporpoise it.
A horrible name for a horse but Ratfacemcdougal 4.05 is the nap,I found it hard to choose between 4 so picked the one at the biggest price.Well done yesterdays winners.
It might compliment a dish such as those concocted by Chef Aubrey played by Timothy Spall in the Film 'Life Is Sweet'.
In a restaurant called Regret Rien.
These include Duck with Chocolate Sauce, Saveloy on a bed of Lychees, Tripe Souffle and my favourite (which I have tried to cook) Clams wrapped in Ham in a Cockle based sauce (it turns to mush btw).
Maybe the Trainer feeds his Horses with this drink and is getting an extra edge?
Don't think she thought about the American war. That is what is it is called in Vietnam.
The less we know about each other the better but my late Father-In- Law could not sit straight for photos as there were too many War medals on the right side of his body.
Jonathan statied he had.a relative who constructed that Embassy but there was always a possibility someone like me on this Forum is married in to a family of Vietnamese war heroes
Hope Tom M can work his magic on Stone of Destiny - 17.10 Leicester. (I gave up following this one a couple of years ago but, maybe because we've just been up to Edinburgh, he's reeled me back in!)
This is how mad this country has become. ( no I don't mean 21000 being ferried across by the French and Border Force lefties which we paid 84 million to stop )
An assitant/ head lad of 38 years standing has just been banned from legging up staff because some cloth eared female has claimed he invaded her personal space by tapping her on the leg as he did it .
I do it every day ,left hand on rein, right hand leg you up ,tap you , ready, alright . Ffs what the hell is going on in the BHA. They don't have a clue.
We recently had 2 of the wet necks turn up and lecture us for 2 hrs on how to speak to staff . Ffs
When are people going to wake up.
I had Uggy spot on for Worcester, but couldn't run him because the ground had been watered even though there's 8mils plus of rain due . Why is the word firm so terrifying , my horse is being penalised by the idiots who have never been near one ,but went to Uni of course.
Nobody listens ,but this Harrington woman is going to bring us in racing to our knees. She's not a full shilling ,nor are the twats around her .
Have some of that ,I'm utterly fed up up with this PC bollocks where you can't say what's what .

Erato won at 6/1. Suddenly I'm a fan of non-runners!
