The busiest spreadsheet day for a long time: well done all winners. If I've left anyone out, I apologise; please leave a message on this thread and I'll update.
Tony Curtis made some disparaging comments about kissing Marilyn Monroe which sullied his reputation but he did play a more difficult role in that film than Lemmon or
Aston Martini was neither Shaken or stirred and won at 5/4. I like Nicky's bumper horses - they always seem more mature than the others and like today can run a bit green but still coast up by 5 or 6 length.
Went with Touchwood because of the jockey booking...Ruth has another three runners at Wetherby this evening, wouldn't surprise me if one of her bigger priced ones went in.
War is the result of a fundamental flaw in the human species. It means that disagreements between countries have to be resolved by the destruction of thousands or even millions of human beings. Historically it has been about conquest and brute force, the desire of those in power to rule over larger and larger areas of territory. Of course it still is about territorial boundaries, the Ukraine war being a dreadful example of a dictatorial regime invading another country to subdue it, no matter what the cost.
I think there are very few humans who want to find themselves with the choice of killing and injuring people they have never met or submitting to an ideology (like Fascism) which denies human rights.
Those who glorify war are misguided. It is always terrible and involves incalculable suffering. The bravery and self sacrifice element is laudable and remarkable. Most soldiers do not want to risk their lives, particularly those who are conscripted from civilian life.
Is it a flaw though? It's not just humans that fight to protect their territory or go to steal others'. It is an evolutionary imperative, as anyone who watched the recent Attenborough series will agree. The difference is, humans have the technology to destroy each other and everything else around them. Political and religious ideology is the catalyst for that territorial drive that is embedded in our DNA.
Good shout out for Tony Curtis.
