Is someone looking after Jack Grealish? He has some of the hallmarks of a Paul Gascoigne whose "friends" helped him to fall into a personal abyss. There are no excuses for anyone to claim that they do not know the risks when the dangers of excessive drinking are starkly illustrated by a string of successful young sports stars (including jockeys) who have suffered from the disease of alcoholism.
Of course he and the rest should be able to celebrate and enjoy (more than) a few drinks, but he has gone - and has probably been encouraged to go - way beyond what is sensible.
Facile Vega's full sister Aurora Vega makes her debut at Sligo this evening. It's a little surprising that Willie has brought her out in the middle of June in a race that could hardly be weaker. (The probable second favourite is at least a winner of a P2P, but don't get too excited - the mare she beat is a 22-race maiden.) By contrast Facile debuted in a red-hot Boxing Day bumper at Leopardstown and was still backed with confidence. Still, it'll be interesting to see how little sis goes tonight.
Joe Fanning is having a fine time at present though i never seem to catch his winners. He is mob handed at Ayr tonight and i'll go with Viva Voce in the 17.50 to be one of his winners.
How the mighty are fallen. Frank Spencer goes to Brighton for two low-rated Simcock dodgepots, both admittedly with good chances. These will be only his third and fourth rides this month - his last winner was on 19 May. If both win today he takes home £649 for his trouble. Riding for Ballydoyle must seem an awfully long time ago.
He was one of Simcock’s at Goodwood last Sunday; Mountain Road. He looked to have a decent chance on ratings. However, Oisin was riding for Charlie Johnstone, and you didn’t have to be mystic meg or Paul the Octopus to predict how the contest would unfold. The following day’s Racing Post analysis said something along the lines of ‘raced in rear, made late headway and stayed on well towards the finish’. The analyst could have written that up the night before.
Wetherby is a symptom of the dross problem. This is the final flat meeting of the year there and no one will miss it. I know someone who was at the last meeting a week ago and there were hardly any paying customers there. There is zero appetite for more basement-level flat tracing in the area, with Catterick being just up the road and Thirsk and Ripon so well established. I note that the opening flat meeting on April 30th had a feature race called the Poundland Mascot Gold Cup. That just about sums it up. What the hell were they thinking?
It's hardly taxiing along the runway, never mind taking off. I was pretty shocked when they closed Towcester and put in a dog track, but flat racing at Wetherby? That beat the lot.
I'm with Pebbles today esp as my only tracker is at nearly bedtime, 2045. Chookie is well hcped but at 8 a bit uninspiring.
Nap Brighton 1530 Acotango
looks an open race but stable is doing well and IF he hadn't run last time would be a lot shorter. I know the response is 'but he did' but the 1st n 3rd from previous both won nto.
Five UK meetings today and I don’t think there’s a single race I’ll bother watching. The Brighton card must be a contender for the worst of the season (so far)!D Day Odette in the 16.10 at Salisbury is my selection.
Warning: Off topic
