Maxxum runs in the 6.55 at Tipperary today. I called him the worst handicapped horse in Ireland here earlier in the year, and Gordon Elliott must be despairing at the treatment meted out by the handicapper. Having won an ordinary (80-116 ) handicap he was given 17lb, a rise he defied in no uncertain terms in winning a Pertemps qualifier for which he suffered another 18lb hike. That's two and a half stone in two goes - pretty savage in any class of racing. Despite that Maxxum still started a hot favourite in a 0-150 at the DRF in which he finished 12th - and was handed another 7lb for his trouble. Now he is up to 145 and has to lump 11-12 round in the Pertemps Final, finishing 14th. It's as if someone doesn't like Gordon Elliott. Anyway, he has little choice than to go chasing now. He deserves an even break.
I did. I really loved the head on view where Ray Cochrane waits for a gap knowing he has some horse underneath him.
I liked the following BTL comment "interesting story from Ray Cochrane, as the runners were milling around at the start a certain L. Piggott enquired, "what's that?" directed at Ray Cochrane, Ray is supposed to have said, "take a good look at him now, because all your going to see on the way back is his arse"
My hobby horse: again we have two AW meetings today, both this evening, both south country. I doubt they will be well attended. By contrast, Windsor had over 8,000 through the gate on Monday.
A good piece in the RP yesterday lamenting the scrapping of the Grade 2 Dipper Novices Chase. I t was run on that excellent New Year's Day card at Cheltenham and was always targeted by good horses. Before they moved it to Cheltenham it was run at Newcastle and I always used to pretend it was named after my beloved black Labrador Dipper. Sentiment aside, it's silly to scrap this race as its trip of 2m5f and its position in the calendar really suited trainers with promising staying novices.
Ryan's gone to Sallisbury for just one ride, Greek Order in the 3.15. He rode him in both runs last year so he must like him. The Charlton yard has had only a handful of runners on the turf so far this season.
That was a vintage Guineas, yet EGS was a cut above Chief Singer, Lear Fan and Rainbow Quest on the day. Great days. I doubt if this year's renewal is full of potential champions.
Still allowed me my "Here i go again" gag and it won - so all good! It was picked as it supposedly finished well last time and was stepping up after gelding. In an 8 horse race EW at least looked very gettable!
It was a very good spot, David. Oddly enough, I see DC was born in Saltburn, not far up the road (and base of the Reveleys, another fine racing family).
Birdie Or Bust won the 17.20 at Tipperary at 4/7.
Thought the SP might be 7/4 but no shame in 4/7.
