I used to go there back in the late 70's and early 80's (long before it got "notions" and became The Harvest Festival). The meeting started the week after the All Ireland Final. It was pretty grim back in those days, always seemed to rain and "good" was rarely mentioned in the going.
Hi Leo, It was only a social visit and I did not really fancy anything strongly but I enjoyed the day. In the 1st race I had a token bet on the winner.
2nd race my nap on here ran,I had backed him EW early in the morning. He unseated his jockey on the way to the start and headed back up the Sandown hill past the winning post followed by his jockey. When caught the jockey did not seem to want a leg up to be remounted and decided to lead the horse back down to the 5 furlong start at a jog.I was hoping for him to be withdrawn to get my stake refunded but no such luck. The race started and apart from the runner left in the stalls he was the 1st horse beaten. Strangley when this was going on he was backed from 7/1 into 9/2 favourite at the off.
3rd race another token bet I fell for an unraced Frankel filly of J Gosdens before it drifted she started slowley and then faded
4th race no bet but the person I was with had a small bet on the winner so cheered him home.
5th race I had backed the 2nd EW in the morning when there was 3 places so had a result that he did not come 3rd.I also laid the favourite.
6 th race backed the 2nd Favourite who was a well beaten 7th.
7th race backed the winner EW in the morning.
I also had 2 losers at Doncaster as they were on the big screen.
We had driven up so did not stop for a drink afterwords but will make a note about Sextons thanks.
I think it's a refuge for the scoundrels that have been thrown out of the pubs in Kingston. The owner is a keen racing fan & there's loads of racing pictures & memorabilia.
