Aucunrisque is one of my horses of the season. This admirable type won his fifth race today for the excellent Chris Gordon. He has been on the go since October and has taken his racing extremely well. He's gone from winning an ordinary bumper to winning a Grade 2 novice hurdle, and even when beaten he has given his best. As the modest Gordon says, when you have horses as genuine as Aucunrisque, training is easy.
Been a cracking season for Chris, which, speaking from my pocket, he seems to have gone from strength to strength. Hope he can keep it up. I just plumped for the wrong one today, or in pocket parlance was a bit greedy and went for the longer odds. Anyway, he deserves all the credit he can get.

I thought as it was a long shot I'd go for an extra place and backed it at 20-1. It won.
However, I saw later (I had been planting potatoes) that the winning SP was 80-1! But I did not get BOG as I'd gone for an extra place. Then, even later I noticed that Doug Campbell had tweeted, "Hollerday Ridge is prone to breaking blood vessels ,and a huge drifter in the 2.49 Newton Abbot ..... but 150/1 with Sky looks ridiculously big." I hope he got it!
On a different topic, I'd say on the GN staggered starts would be ones to try. It might be best to take the GN out of the equation altogether although that's what started the train of thought. It would be best to run some trials to see if the concept was workable. The problem, though, is that these would be lacking in quality.
Meanwhile, the expert on Irish horses is tying himself in knots over tomorrow's Irish Grand National. He's got at least seven in the frame and thinks it's a fantastic field.
Staggered starts is a good alternative. The adapted starting stalls seemed the most revolutionary idea. It 's the area which probably needs the most thought. There may be other ways of staggering the start.
Unfortunately I think it will be a 30 runner National within ten years. There’ll also be a fifth day at Cheltenham and even more poor quality racing added to the calendar. The sport is controlled by the betting companies and unless that changes racing will continue to be bled dry and eventually become insignificant. By that point the bookmakers will have moved on to their next cash cow.
After that, Mine’s A Double - 17.05 Newbury (nap).
I haven't been able to contribute the last couple of days so just catching up on the debate. I'd reduce the GN numbers to 30 runners. There were at least two horses that 'started' this year's race that weren't even on the track; they galloped off from the all weather.
Slightly off topic but F1 would be more exciting if drivers had to sprint to the cars at race start like the old days and to make it more interesting...change their own wheels.
That reminded me of when USA got the Footy World Cup and went about trying to 'improve' it for the domestic audience.
Two sets of goals in Extra time anyone? Multiball? Take half the players off? No goalies? Throw a few dogs on the pitch?
I guess the question is, is it broken? IMO the GN isn't broken, and I'm with Dilton in the 'don't give a flyer' what one day a year race watchers think. I see the point that racing needs it's image to be as good as possible, but you only have to pop BTL on any newspaper allowing comments to see the annual keyboard warriors with their venomous, ignorant, normally one sentence, comments. These aren't the people I want appeasing.
Many of the general populous view the GN as the highlight of the jumps - I don't, it is, and always has been, a bit of a novelty for me - and in reality is probably one of the worse betting prospects there is! Yet the world and their dog have their 'annual flutter'.
What it does do is put racing under the microscope for an hour, and in some respects offers a view of the sport in microcosm; the joyous occasion, the spectacle, and, often, the regrettable death. It's all there, and you have to accept it if you want to be a part of it.
It's my view that it isn't broken, so doesn't require fixing. Would reducing the numbers reduce fatalities? It's a possibility, and quite likely. Would it eradicate fatalities? I doubt it. They will still occur IMO. It may reduce the number bought down, which then pass away, but look at Est Est Belle. Reducing numbers would do nothing to stop that kind of fatality happening.
Grand National - I'm grateful for everyone's time for reading/responding to Saturday's idea. Perhaps I should have asked a direct question within it - would you rather have a 30-runner National, or staggered starts?
tbh out of the two I would go 30 runners. It would be the least faffing around and still be a race as we know it. What makes the national what it is, is the tradition. The more you chip away at the tradition, what are you left with? I think most people here on this board may well have been introduced to horse racing by watching the national as a kid, so I feel it should be protected and kept as close to the race we all know and love as much as possible.
Mt Leinster won at 7/2

If given that stark choice, I would opt for 30 runners. But would that actually achieve any less injuries or fatalities?
Anyway, Buona Pasqua to all.
