Some good winners again on Friday - things are hotting up, so here is how the table stands with a week to go. As ever, give me a shout if I've blundered.
As noted, plenty of winners this month. i don't think I'll be troubling the Judges so will stick to my usual strategy of trying to be in profit at end of month with De Barley Basket ( mr 3.30) in the hope its not too high in the weights .......
Back in 1981 before going to RA on Hunt Cup day I spent several hours carefully studying the form and selected a horse called Braughing trained by Clive Brittain (a shrewd placer of horses in big handicaps) in the Hunt Cup.. Of course it came nowhere. Later that year I went to Newmarket on Cambridgeshire day and Braughing was running in the Cambridgeshire. I obviously had a "I'm not backing that (insert own expletive) nag again" moment. Naturally, Braughing won at odds of 50/1. Why is it I remember my betting disasters so well?
last night. I'm having to have a little talk to myself before I go in again on Trillium. Can't see anything but victory. So that could be very expensive!
Over at Haydock, Boardman is out to prove me wrong again. I've made plenty backing him but its not his time of year and I don't rate the form of his 2nd last time. Putting my money where my big fat gob is I've had small ews on Wanees who I fancy and Harrow, a cliff horse.
I'm sure we are all aware Milton has plenty of chances at Rasen today - surprised the fan club are not picking his today. Must be a fair old trek up.
Another clutch of winners selected yesterday, well done. The table makes interesting reading as it shows that even if they don’t select another winner, there are already four people who will show a profit in September, along with a few others not far off it. Great stuff, which I think would better many of the pundits who offer us their daily dose of wisdom in the print media and online.
I’m going to swerve Newmarket today as I never seem to do well at this meeting, although I have backed Perotto (ew to 7 places) in the Cambridgeshire. My selection is Chadlington Lad in the 16.40 at Market Rasen.
I have also done Jimi Hendrix on an e.w. trebles coupon but I think this is the second time this week GazP might have jinxed me.
I have done e,w. and not win only but that is not my nap.
It is a confusing Saturday and bad planning. Feast or Famine in the Racing Calendar for someone who feels as self-entitled as me.
How does one juggle Curragh and Newmarket in such a close time frame?
We have lives!
I also have a friend with Puppy Eyes who asked for tips in Listowel and Harry stood up to the plate.
Also Harry posted a fantastic Story about Pentland Hills and we all need a good news story despite our natural cynicism.
Moida liked a smoked single malt to tipple on his winners. I can't remember his tipple. I know it wasn't Laphroaig. I think it was from one of those Scottish Islands near Iceland.
I have backed Paddington in the 13.05 at Curragh because someone may be looking down from above.
I think the APOB hegemony on the Beresford Stakes has to end at some point and why not today?
I have done a saver on Continuous as I going through a phase that I think Japan have hell of a lot to offer European Pedigrees.
My nap is Roaring Gallagher trained by JOB who is rarely out of form.
He is by Roaring Lion. The name is a play on Rory Gallagher who was born in Donegal but bred in Cork. The Electrici Guitarist's Electric Guitarist. He even has a square named after him in Cork City.
I have definitely done him in a double with Jimi Hendrix because how stupid would I feel if that came off?
I'm afraid your friend won't be able to back Champ Kiely today as he is staying in his stable. The best I can suggest is to make sure she doesn't miss his racecourse appearance when ever that may be. He is very useful. It's a shame he is not running today as I was banking on him to turn round what has not been a bountiful Harvest Festival. Festivals should not be this gruelling should they?
I can't remember Moida's favourite scotch either, but if it was a smoky one it was probably an Islay malt. Islay is far from remote. You could say it is as soft and inviting as Wiltshire, which is fitting as it is largely owned by Lord Margadale whose family hails from that county. Margadale's brother is Hughie Morrison.
It seems Pentland Hills is going novice chasing now and has schooled well. Nicky Henderson seems particularly attached to this horse and his return yesterday is testament to his skill and patience. I always remember one dark winter Monday at Plumpton when Pentland had just dotted up in a little maiden hurdle and his trainer announced that it was next stop Cheltenham. Oh how the journos laughed. And while everyone said he won the Triumph only because Sir Erec broke down, he proved it was no fluke by following up in the champion juvenile hurdle at Aintree.
There used to be a fair bit of drinking chat on TH years ago, what with Moida's malt whisky and Dilton's port from Aldi. Don't get me started on Danish akvavit, the quickest way to get a dull lunch party going. Not only must the spirit be ice cold but the glasses must be kept in the freezer too and then filled right to the top. It's not for sipping.
On Cork's finest, I used to have a Rory Gallagher poster on my teenage bedroom wall. And I wore a checked shirt like his too. But I could never get my locks to look like Rory's.
The 13.05 Paddington doesn't run. Don't blame the RMT for this cancellation.
The smoky malts are the only Whiskys i can drink - I even like Laphroaig. I cant drink the blended stuff at all and other malts are wasted on me. My ex neighbour had a fine whisky cellar and tried to educate me but it was a waste of time...and good whisky! I do enough damage with beer and wine to mean spirits are wisely kept at bay in general.
My brother loves port - or loved it. he expressed a fondness a few years back and he gets a fair amount of gifts - he's involved in lots of charitable stuff ( One of the good guys) which seem to get him presents as thanks. it was bottles of port for years - he has over 150 bottles ( i find it too rich), My mates wife has over 600 bottles of gin though these are apparently an "investment".
On another note - i think EGS picks more NRs than anyone else. I suspect its because he tends to play his cards early and by the time many of us look the NRs are largely out the way. There is a rule I think where an NR is seen as an even day - ie no loss? So if theres 5 quid in it at end might be worth a check!
On Another note again re Rory Gallagher and others of his vintage there is an excellent facebook group that talks about folk like him and classic blues/rock/jazz. its only a post or two a day if you follow it and the quotes and stories are always interesting.
Wannes won at sp 5/1 (napepd ew).
Nap Bell Rock EW placed at 16/1 (2nd)
NAP Lucander 3.40 Newmarket.
Zoinnocent ew. Curragh 3.20
Tomorrows Irish Cesarewitch.
I have to say that Master of reality at 66/1 for 7 places, looks very good value to me !

I've landed on Bell Rock EW 3.40N for the nap.
I've also backed Kitsune Power EW, and probably would have backed Savvy Victory if the price hadn't evaporated!
