Just read Jim Wilson has passed away. Amateur in name only ,brilliant rider and judge and very quick at working out his " present " when he won on one .
I had been getting one handicapped and Kev Mooney did to good a job finishing 4th at Cheltenham in a hurdle at the meeting after the festival which Jim didnt miss and suggested a nice amateurs race in 3 weeks time at Plumpton and he would ride him.
I went into the weighing room at Plumpton to get the saddle from him ,there he is sat on the bench puffing away on his pipe and he said I dont want cash when this one wins ,pop a cheque in the post because carrying a lot of cash is not to be advised around here .
Rural Sussex ? hardly bandit country. .
I said ffs Jim it's only a 3k race so your on 10% ok, hardly a Dick Turpin job on the way home is it.
Ah ,you've forgotten about the odds to a ton then. Hes 12s you know. I'm not going to win to far, as we can have him again at Newton A in a fortnight .
I said just win ,I've backed him and I've got all my punters on as well.
So have I, so dont worry Jim said .
He gave me a heart attack almost by dropping the horses head in front on the line after sitting there looking pretty from 2 out. Then Gardie Grissell on the 2nd objected saying Jim was under elbowing him to stop him riding a finish. ( which he was ) Jim was to smart for the stewards though and out he came smiling away. How he got away with it I'll never know .
I had the last laugh though as the horse was hammered into 6/4 fav so the odds to the ton didnt hurt me but the owner saw him ok as well.
I was at Uttoxeter for Midlands National in 1994 and watching horses in parade ring ... the lad leading up Glenbrook D'Or (trained by Jim Wilson) said to a mate of his standing next to me "He's been laid out for this" so I did my usual little EW bet on the Tote and, sure enuf, he won! at around 10/1. So, Jim could also train as well as riding.
Off topic but i enjoyed Adrian Dunbar singing last night on TV on a cop show Ridley - it brightened it up no end- he crooned a Richard Hawley song ( Coles Corner) beautifully. Apparently he sings at the end each week - i recommend the singing- the cop bit is by the numbers to be be taken or left.
Againt my better judgement (if such a thing exists), I'm prepared to give Rapscallion one more chance when the ground turns softer. However, in the actual race I reckon Bowman is the one to take out of it.
My tracker threw up a nap today at cartmel and its about only Non Runner on card - sigh. It had a chance too...usually my tracker throws up ones that havent won in 2 or 3 year. One day i'll clean it up...
Anyway, I like watching Cartmelraces - it looks a real fun day out so i'll stay there
when you sent the goalie up yesterday with Tudor i followed you in EW.. i can never catch John Egan and your pick was a good shout Very unlucky at a mighty 18s - paid EW obviously but looked like winning 100 yards out or so
I have just been to a meeting at work where mission statements and edicts from above are on the agenda that clearly use the language of the Church of Scientology.
Brazen bolt won 7/2.
Shouldvebeenaring won at 3s and the 2nd went into the tracker
