Well done Alan, John987, and JD on their Thursday winners. If I've left anyone out, I apologise; please leave a message on this thread and I'll update.
Completely lost interest in domestic rugby (union, never seen much league), and England largely over the last decade or so, but have enjoyed a few matches in this world cup. Even a poor England were gifted a win by a woeful display from Argentina, in the softest pool of the tournament. Hopefully, that has given them some confidence - they have started to look good at times, although I wonder what will happen when they face some decent opposition...
Japan have caused some upsets in the last few world cups (OK, they got a boost hosting), and I think they can beat Argentina and finish second in the group. I may have my permutations wrong, but I believe they'd then face Wales, who've played above my expectations so far.
Japan are VERY unlikely to win, but I think I can lay my £1 bet on the exchange, if they get through the group stages...
Looking for big prices for end of month in the comp and a place at the villa: I've backed her EW and in EW double with Lightship in 1.50, using a free bet and combined win odds of just 1000/1 or so...
Back in the real world, I have backed some at rather shorter prices :)
Oh and well done to yesterday's winners, and apologies again to Leo - we both picked same horse that deadheated for 2nd!
Luke, neither of us jinxed Minnetonka yesterday. Blame for the defeat lays squarely on the shoulders of Sam 'Psycho' Hitchcott. Surely one of the rides of the season...but for all of the very wrong reasons.
Lucinda Russell was on Desert Island discs this morning. It was a lovely interview, especially the part about Campbell Gillies & Brindisi Breeze. She also picked a track from one of my favourite bands - The The. What a brilliant woman.
Another thing, I was looking at Newmarket’s 4.10 & Bradman was trading at 100/1. Wouldn’t 99.9/1 have been more appropriate?
I would say it is highly variable and the Physical Shops are probably acting as Loss Leaders.
2 of the 6 Bookmakers in Cork I used to frequent are gone but I visit the other 4 that are bang in the City Centre with high rents and are buzzing.
I am struck by the cultural diversity.
People from backgrounds totally different to people reared in these Islands where Horse Racing is a normal part of our culture.
I am guessing the Bookmakers need this Physical Space as a gateway drug entry route for new migrants to Cork who will not find Horse Racing otherwise without communal disgust about certain rides and a friend who shreds his docket at the same time.
I have learnt lots of swear words in foreign languages.
The Blair/Brown governments saw an explosion of betting shops on the high street and the associated advent of those casino machines. The shops were sleekly furnished, well lit, smoke free and provided with multiple screens and hot drinks machines. That famous Catholic convert Tony "Super Casino" Blair in particular was a fervent believer that the new religion for the masses was to be communal gambling, with the national coffers being swelled by the huge tax take (until the big players all went offshore and Gordon "Son of the Manse" Brown decided to scrap plans for Las Vegas type establishments in Blackpool, Manchester, Greenwich and other places). So for a while the only growth in the retail sector in poorer communities was the proliferation of bookies and pawnshops. Then eventually council planners woke up to the harm being done and restricted the number of betting shops within a certain area. (Pawnshops however still thrived.) Perhaps we will be revisiting all our yesterdays and doing cash betting when our online accounts have been closed - anecdotal evidence says that big pro punters are heading back to the racecourse and betting on the rails again to circumvent account restricyions and affordability checks. But will that much-missed seedy, friendly, shabby atmosphere ever be replicated?
4 trackers in this race & although I'm not selecting her here, I'll be having a modest investment each way in Elegancia. She's got zero chance on the ratings (needs to find another 17lb). However, she caught my eye when staying on behind Al Asifah at Goodwood & the step in trip will help.
Will throw a late Nap in for interest ...
Eldrickjones, 20:00 Newc
My ew selection, Island Bandit, was second at 13/2. (Backed it at 22/1 this morning. 😁)

I've taken a speculative punt on the Rugby too!
