Vaguely OT but the rather good Hadley Freeman has joined the long line of writers leaving the G. in her resignation she notes
"the paper has become internally dysfunctional, with writers and editors alike all terrified of saying The Wrong Take."
I think we've been seeing that in TH for a few years now and elsewhere in the paper its obvious only one opinion is allowed on certain topics.
Sad as it was a great Newspaper in the day and was happy to publish columnists who saw both both sides of an argument. Very few places you get that now.
I can't think of any other established newspaper which is not owned by non doms and right wing manipulators, (not to say those with a history of supporting the Nazi Party and Hitler in the 1930s) and which publishes lengthy articles on the left of Centre today? Which shows how far the "Left of Centre" has shifted to the Right in our current era.
The Guardian was always a "Liberal supporting" newspaper and it still is in its modern incarnation.
It is probably inevitable that the paper's owners have to direct their editorial line at a target audience which they judge is essential for their survival? There are always going to be issues handled in a way that displeases some of us who don't want to subscribe to Attila the Hun's rags. However, it comes down to a choice between a paper's broadly acceptable political line which is about social justice, fairness and progressive policies in favour of a more equitable society and those papers which want to reduce UK to a country where workers are exploited to the maximum and their rights (such as they are) are expunged and the poor are demonised. If the Guardian goes down, where do you look?
This is not to argue that the paper should not be criticised. I regularly find fault with it.
The Guardian is still my usual read online, but it is sad to see good journalists leaving, and have to agree about certain opinions being silenced. There seems to be a worrying thread when good writers feel they are no longer allowed to freely express themselves.
